Just because no-ones ever caught one on film, that doesn't mean they're not here, even as occasional visitors. What UK people, like The Sun seem to forget is that even the pro-nature filmakers have a hell of a trouble filming these magnificent animals in the wild, even when in a boat in various "White Shark" hot spots around the world, where although they can't film it or even see it, there is always one not far away.
Another misconception that we have is that the water is too cold.
In South Africa, where the Atlantic meets the Indian, the water is colder than it is here! Great Whites are one of the few fish which are warm-blooded, and they also give birth to live young.
Even the fear of the presence of Carcharadon Carcharias in these waters will not deter most people going in the ocean. May I point out that thousands, even millions of us go to the Mediterranaen resorts for holidays. we don't stay out of that water AND YET there have been several recorded shark attacks, most notably the onwe at Malta, which was fatal. NOT ONLY THAT, but one of the largest White Sharks ever caught was caught in the Med, at just over 20ft. (That's 5ft short of the supposed length of "Jaws".

I am rambling, but I do apologise.. MY POINT IS that no-one has photographed one, so they means they don't exist? Of course not, just remember that those films you've seen on the telly about these things may only run for a half-hour, but they would have taken months, even years to film.

Back in 89, a Great White was supposedly seen off Walton on the Naze, Essex, (near Clacton). That's the North Sea, supposedly one of the richest Seas in the world. Nobody photographed it, so that was obviously bullshit, right?
WRONG.
There is ABSOLUTELY no reason why they shouldn't be here. In the Atlantic they have been studied AND filmed as far north as Newfoundland. That's colder than our water, as is South Africa.
The food is here. The seals, the big fish, other sharks. If it really wanted to, it could predate on Dolphins. That HAS been filmed. They use a tactic where they seem uninterested. They also do this with seals...

To close then, it would be great to have interesting wildlife in the UK. I like Bill Oddie, but, don't get me wrong, I'm fed up with him having to talk about Hedgehogs and Badgers all the time!

Mark
