In my brutally honest opinion, think it as narrow minded as you like, we're meant to be slim. I'm not talking size 0 or anything crazy like that - I do understand the term anorexia - but I'm just talking healthy. It's not an obsession, it's just a very real fact that slim is healthy.

I know given the comments above I'll probably get a shower of abuse for this seemingly right-wing comment but it's as valid an opinion as the guy who made this thread.

I have a blog (eyes-open.blog.co.uk) which posts my further opinion that the parents of obese children should be charged with abuse. We should aim for and celebrate healthy bodies in society, whereas what you take from TV for example, is praising people whose weight is unexcusably, medically obese and sending a message to younger generations that this is alright. If it was alright, it wouldn't bring about an endless list of medical problems.

I fully understand and appreciate that people of whatever size are attractive to people of a particular size and I respect that. But the above is purely in reaction to the so called "obsession" stated in the first post of this thread and the fact I feel people are digressing from the healthy norm and sending the wrong message to our children.

couldn't agree more. While I think, on a superficial level, there's nothing wrong with being big and some people prefer that, hey go for it. But from a health point of view being obese, (not just overweight, obese) is in my book, akin to being anorexic, with all the problems and stresses it puts on the body. Neither of these extremes are or should be acceptable but it seems to me that its perfectly fine to rip apart all the anorexics for being a 'bag of bones' etc whereas we should be more understanding and empathetic to the obese? I completely agree with what Danny has said. Whilst i am a big girl myself, i am always trying to lose weight, because i know that if i get any bigger than i am, health problems would be an issue, and in the long term, it just isnt good for me.

I dont think skinny is attractive, and neither is fat. If i was a bloke, i dont think i would go for someone my size, but then i wouldnt go for anything under a size 12, cos i think that woman are meant to have curves (and by curves i MEAN curves, not fat wobbly bits like i got...lol!)

Do you smoke, drink alcohol or take drugs?

If we're supposed to be 'slim' then our bodies would force us to be by producing an amount of Insulin to burn any fat that may occur. It doesn't matter how you live. You are going to croak at some point and the fat people in the world satisfy 'chubby chasers'. If you like, lets take it back a couple hundred years, maybe. They admired a fat woman and encouraged it as they thought she'd know good food.

What pisses me off is people that say, "I'm going to get myself to the gym" and never do, but that's for another time.

I agree, obesity is definitely akin to anorexia. RE empathetic comment I think it's because over half of the UK are overweight so that's probably also over half of the people who make the comments.

I feel TV aim at the majority and show programmes that will appease them and keep them happy, which in turn ensures ratings for over half of the population and increased revenue. Instead they should show programmes about the real problems obesity causes. They are keen to show programmes criticising anorexia, which backs up (maybe coincidentally Surprised ) my comment as they aren't the majority of the population.

I think skinny is just considered closer to the norm that obese is because you can only get so skinny before you drop dead, whereas you can eat until your half a ton from what I've seen (not good, but you know what I mean Razz )

Pretty much disagree completely.

Our bodies burn the amount of energy they need, any excess is stored as fat. I'd say it's pretty straightforward to see that we don't need any more when it starts sitting on our hips - hence the "meant to be slim". I get we should have a bit of excess in case we get ill but from what you're saying if I dipped my hand in some hot water I should just expect my body to grow a protective glove? Razz And if we're going back in time then we should also look at the state of medical science in this "100 years ago".

I think the last comment could be a dangerous subject in a forum so lets leave off it...! Exclamation [/url]
