So many people in their "dislikes" list arrogance but, in the same breath, want somebody who is confident of themselves. Perhaps this is counter-intuitive because surely the more self-confident you become the closer you become to being arrogant.

So, where's the line?

self confident people don't need to tell you they are brilliant to know that they are... whereas arrogant take every opportunity to remind the world at large how brilliant they are.

How can you tell if somebody is generaly arrogant from looking at there profile? or even communicating with them by email. If there are any arrogant comments or whatever then they might just have had a bad day or just be in a bad mood for whatever reason. Bad mood is not arrogance. there's an old saying, the one that goes "never judge a book by its cover, always flick through the pages". In my opinon its quite hard to express your true personality in this "virtual" world. I think its gotta be an art form in itself!

Arrogance is "making claims or pretensions to superior importance or rights". Thus self-confidence and arrogance are only really differentiated by the basis on which that importance is claimed. If it is justified then it is self-confidence if not, arrogance.

Your definition maybe true of some people but it may also include those who are shy (hence they don't tell people how brilliant they are) and those, for lack of a better phrase, who are full of shit (who exaggerate or lie about their brilliance). Neither of the these groups would be self-confident or arrogant.

Well I'm not confident about anything that I'm unsure of, which is of course a daft obvious thing to say, because if I could be sure then I would be confident.

As for arrogance, well, some can be rather too assuming can't they?
